How Does Invisalign Work?

Invisalign is a little different from traditional braces. With Invisalign you will wear a clear aligner that covers all of your teeth completely. You will have a team of people (your orthodontist & an orthodontic lab technician) map out exactly how your teeth will move to reach the final goal. Next the aligners are created. Each aligner moves your teeth less than one-half millimeter at a time. This happens when you push the aligner over the teeth. The pressure from the plastic activates the periodontal ligaments surrounding the teeth and this begins the bone remodeling process. Cells called osteoblasts then create new bone around your teeth.

Who Is A Candidate For Invisalign?

Most people with common orthodontic problems are candidates for Invisalign. It can correct issues such as crowded teeth, gaps, and crossbites. It is very important that the clear aligners are worn for the prescribed amount of time. Patients must be diligent in wearing their Invisalign for a minimum of twenty-two hours a day to see success. Invisalign is also a great option for those who may feel self-conscious in traditional braces as clear aligners are less noticeable.

Who Is NOT A Candidate For Invisalign?

Unfortunately Invisalign isn’t for everyone. The following issues may cause effect eligibility for Invisalign: gum disease, an untreated cavity, dental implants, TMJ disorder, small teeth, misshapened or eroded teeth. If you feel unable to make the time commitment to wear Invisalign a minimum of twenty-two hours a day, Invisalign might not be the best option for you. How Much Does Invisalign Cost?

The cost may vary due to your exact needs, the orthodontist’s time for labor, or your insurance. The Invisalign website quotes their treatment anywhere from $3,000-$7,000. They also say that there could be up to $3,000 to qualify for from your insurance company. Traditional braces (with metal brackets) typically cost $2,000-$6,000 for comparison. Obviously the cost will depend on your specific case, how much time it will take to move your teeth, and the amount of work that needs to be done.

What Happens After Invisalign Is Completed?

When Invisalign is completed expect to feel like showing your teeth when you smile and saying “CHEESE” for every picture. Laughing when you feel like it- and not worried about people staring at your teeth (but actually hoping they are). Oh yeah- and don’t forget to wear your retainers and maintain normal oral hygiene habits (brushing twice a day and flossing)!
